Kettering University’s team took a unique approach to simulation by leveraging the capabilities of Unreal Engine, paired seamlessly with Simulink. Their open-loop perception testing began with creating a detailed virtual environment where a camera mounted on the ego vehicle captured scene data. This data was processed using a Simulink model that performed lane detection, and visual results were monitored step-by-step across the detection pipeline. When it came to closed-loop testing, the team designed two main state machines to govern the vehicle’s decision-making: one for longitudinal control and one for lateral control. These state machines handled behaviors like speeding up, slowing down, stopping, lane-keeping, turning, and lane changes. The interlinked logic allowed the vehicle to respond correctly to a variety of real-time stimuli, such as approaching another vehicle or deciding when to overtake. The combined controller setup was tested using simulation dashboards with sliders and gauges to feed in different values during runtime, making it easier to visualize system responses.

The longitudinal controller used a standard PID logic, and careful attention was paid to meet acceleration and jerk constraints. Their simulations clearly showed how the system responded to reference speed inputs and how actual speed tracked over time. On the lateral side, the lane change controller was built using adaptive Model Predictive Control (MPC). They also developed a reliable vehicle dynamics model, including both single-track and dual-track 3DOF setups. Validation was done in two phases—first using a linear bicycle model, and later with real-world test data. One of the most creative parts of Kettering’s project was building a fully functional Unreal city. This virtual city had everything needed to simulate complex urban driving: buildings, intersections, animated pedestrians, and programmable traffic lights.
